Healthcare Organization Management in JCI 8: Connecting Leadership, Quality, People and Data
One of the challenges of JCI is that each agency can prepare its own standards well. But the overall corporate system is not connected to Healthcare Organization Management in JCI 8th Edition, so it should be considered as a matter of “the entire system management” rather than a combination of documents from multiple parties.
Leadership needs to define direction and risk owners.
The administrator should see a summary of the clinical, operational, facility, technology and workforce risks ready to determine who owns which item. There is a lot of committees that are not equal to having good governance. If the issue is not traced until a decision and actual improvement is made.
Quality Improvement Should Be Compatible with Enterprise Goals
The indicators should be selected because they help answer the key questions of the organization. Not because it is easy to store. The hospital should review whether the tracking data reflects Patient Safety, Outcome, Process Reliability and Systemic Risk.
Workforce Management is not a matter of HR only.
Staff availability involves Competency, Orientation, Training, Workload, Well-being and the ability to perform in real role. Human management requires a link of HR data with Clinical Leadership and Operating Unit.
Information must be changed as a decision.
Hospitals often have a lot of information, but the problem is that the data is separated into several systems. The administrators should wonder whether there is a Dashboard or Management Review that helps see trends, repeated problems and areas that need additional resources.
Risk Management to cross the wall of agency
One event may be caused by several systems, such as Medication Error may be about Order Entry, Communication, Staffing, Storage and Technology. If the only analysis of the scene agency, the organization may miss the real root cause.
Create a continuous readiness cycle
Management in accordance with JCI should make risk assessment. Data review, action setting and tracking results occur as a normal cycle. It is not started when there is an Survey Schedule.
Questions that the manager should ask every quarter
- Risk 5 First Ranking of the Enterprise Changes?
- What problems occur again even with an Action Plan?
- Which agency has not enough information for decision.
- Is there a risk of Staffing or Competency that should be systemically solved?
- Any Improvement project shows clear results and should expand the results.
ICORP supports hospitals in making Gap Assessment, Management Workshop, Quality Improvement Roadmap and Monthly Reporting to link standards to the Governance and Real Administration of the Organization.
