Hospital Legionella prevention through an integrated water management programme
Link water-system risks, vulnerable patients and documented corrective action.
Water is also a patient-safety issue
CDC recommends comprehensive water management programmes to reduce Legionella growth and transmission risk in healthcare facilities.[1] This connects engineering, care delivery and the way spaces are used. Confirming that plumbing equipment operates does not, by itself, establish control of microbiological risk.
Consider more than one organism
CDC encourages an all-hazards perspective: a Legionella-focused intervention can affect other organisms in the water system.[1] Its potable-water toolkit places control measures within a water management programme and professional oversight.[2] Do not copy another building’s control values or treatment method without assessing the actual system.
A shared-management suggestion
ICORP suggests that engineering, infection prevention and care teams jointly review system diagrams, risk locations, monitoring ownership and responses to deviations. Repairs, closures and reopening should trigger communication and review of the relevant patient risks, rather than being treated as purely technical work.
Follow the corrective action
Suggested records connect monitoring findings to an action, owner and confirmation of resolution. One test result does not demonstrate continuous system safety. Sampling, testing and response plans require appropriate expertise and local assessment. This article provides no treatment chemical formula or hospital water-system setpoints.
